As a registrar, you will implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the standards of the SCAD Museum of Art (Savannah, Ga.), SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion and Film (Atlanta), and SCAD FASH Lacoste (Lacoste, France) related to the care and loan of works in collections. You will collaborate with the collection manager to update care and management policies in line with current best practices and to ensure proper documentation of artwork. Additionally, you will work with the head registrar to divide and share responsibilities for shipping, insurance, conditioning, travel, and storage. Other duties include the development, implementation, and management of inventories and exhibition mannequins, as well as the oversight of registration details for exhibitions.

In this position, you will create an online database for all forms and record inputs, supervise data entry standards to ensure consistent updates to The Museum System (TMS) and physical files, and oversee object movement. You will also track, process, and manage vendor payments. Additionally, you will maintain current insurance values, contact the insurance office in case of an incident, and stay in touch with lenders and venues. You will review contracts for exhibitions and artists, negotiate loan agreements with insurance providers and couriers, and oversee the installation and de-installation of art. Among other duties, you will complete condition checks and reports, schedule and supervise the packaging and shipping of artwork, and manage logistics to meet deadlines.

In this role, you will plan, prioritize, and schedule your workload while conducting condition checks on works in view and in storage to document changes and ensure compliance with safe storage, packing, and shipping practices. Responsibilities include periodic inventories of the collection with the collections manager, certification that artworks are transported safely and securely, and the generation and maintenance of building reports for all exhibition sites. As needed, you will act as a courier for traveling exhibitions and museum loans. Related tasks involve coordinating paperwork and crates. Additionally, you will collaborate with the SCAD facilities team on museum upkeep, including, but not limited to, light levels, air filtration, pest control, and climate control. You will also stay informed about industry issues to share your expertise with curators and art preparators as a dedicated advocate for the artworks.

This individual is detail-oriented and has a comprehensive understanding of U.S. fine art insurance policies, along with an excellent work ethic that allows for the completion of tasks under conflicting time constraints. They maintain composure in stressful situations and exhibit exceptional leadership capabilities to motivate a team in a fast-paced environment. Additionally, they possess strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, which enable effective communication with key stakeholders regarding unforeseen circumstances, influencing their decisions, and negotiating the desired outcome. A thorough understanding of fine art shipping, customs regulations, and other federal and state laws is critical, as is knowledge of current museum and gallery techniques, practices, and standards related to special exhibitions, registration, and collections records.

Minimum qualifications:  

• Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, or a related discipline
• Experience with all aspects of permanent collections stewardship, major international loans and exhibitions, and the arrangement of domestic and foreign artwork shipments
• Working knowledge of Zoom, Excel, Google Docs, Microsoft Outlook, and Word
• Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally for several days at a time

• 10–20%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
