As a shop technician, you will maintain the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the wood, metal, and plastic shop equipment and buildings. Daily, you will meet with and report to the shop manager, ensure the proper use of WebCheckout, and demonstrate the correct operation of machines and equipment to students. You will also oversee daily assignments to ensure tasks are completed promptly, assist faculty with class demonstrations and equipment setup, and support students in completing projects.

Additionally, you will anticipate and enforce all shop policies, procedures, and safety measures; provide necessary data to the shop manager — including up-to-date inventories and safety or equipment concerns — and identify and develop solutions to enhance shop functionality and efficiency. Other responsibilities include participating in special projects, attending all university-sponsored safety and security training sessions, and providing backup support during periods of high demand.

The ideal candidate demonstrates outstanding cleanliness, attention to detail, and organization skills. They can initiate and promote communication within a team and maintain a positive, cooperative, and productive work environment. The candidate must possess advanced working knowledge of woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques.

Minimum qualifications:      

  • High school diploma
  • Basic machine maintenance and mechanical knowledge
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and Adobe Illustrator
  • Ability to work outside office hours, including nights and weekends as needed

Preferred qualifications:      

  • Bachelor’s or associate's degree
  • Knowledge in metal and plastic fabrication

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:  

  • Valid driver’s license

Travel required:  

  • Less than 10%   

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
