As a shop technician, you will ensure the safe operation and cleanliness of the shop equipment and lab building, demonstrating proper machine use and techniques. You will also anticipate and enforce all lab policies, procedures, and safety measures when working with students and faculty to give clear directions and support project execution. Your responsibilities will include proactively identifying and developing solutions to enhance shop functionality and efficiency, participating in special projects, and attending all university-sponsored safety and security training sessions.

Among other duties, you will provide data to the shop manager regarding inventory, safety, or equipment concerns and serve as backup support during busy times. Additional responsibilities may be assigned at any time.

The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent cleanliness, attention to detail, and organizational skills. They can initiate and foster communication within a team. They can maintain a positive, cooperative, and productive work environment.

Minimum qualifications:      

  • High school diploma
  • Working knowledge of woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques
  • Basic machine maintenance and mechanical knowledge

Preferred qualifications:      

  • Bachelor’s or associate degree 
  • Knowledge of laser cutting and 3D printing
  • Painting and finishing skills 

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:  

  • Valid driver’s license

Travel required:  

  • Less than 10%   

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
