The associate chair of sequential art will assist in developing course schedules and facility use, conducting classroom observations and faculty performance evaluations, and assisting in the hiring of faculty. In this position, you will build a cohesive environment, lead the implementation of responsibilities and expectations, and ensure that faculty is reviewing the curriculum and following policies.

The associate chair oversees the departmental budget, teaches courses, conducts classroom observations and annual faculty performance evaluations, ensures mentoring and faculty development opportunities, makes decisions on student academic matters, assists in recruiting students, and reviews graduate student applications and the placement of students in internships and careers.   

As the associate chair, you will lead faculty and staff in showcasing outstanding student work throughout the year at SCAD Days and other high-profile events. You will also coordinate the submission of student work to competitions and awards in conjunction with the institutional recognition office and compile reports and review requests. Additionally, in this position, you will model academic and professional leadership and ensure the department’s intentional and measurable contribution to the university’s strategic plan through day-to-day operational and long-term strategic actions. As the associate chair, you will maintain a visible on-site presence. The ideal candidate will show evidence of success in creative endeavors, have a dedication to personal and professional integrity, and be innovative and energetic.  

Minimum Qualifications:    

  • Terminal degree in the discipline or a relevant field 

  • Leadership and supervisory experience in academics or significant professional experience 

  • Distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and/or professional expertise with a successful career as a faculty member or discipline professional   

  • Leadership ability to transform strategic vision into implementation 

  • A thorough understanding of curriculum development and utilization of assessments    

  • Ability to conduct thorough evaluations and the knowledge to define needs of the department via good judgement    

  • Willingness to collaborate, excellent organizational skills, outstanding interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills  

Travel required: Less than 10%   

Work Hours: As noted in the employment agreement.
