As a CNC operations coordinator, you will manage the workflow of the CNC lab, operate and maintain lab equipment, and create a prioritized schedule for machine and part fabrication. You will oversee updated records to document the workflow; collaborate with students and faculty to produce projects; and design and develop parts for special projects, exposition booths, displays, or university infrastructure. You will also create, modify, and program CAD files for fabrication; demonstrate lab capabilities to tour groups; and edit student CAD files as needed for programming. Additional responsibilities include driving the shop truck and instructing CNC operators.

In this role, you will review program specifications to determine and set machine operations for piece dimensions and numerical control sequences. You will then measure the finished part dimensions to ensure they meet specifications using precision instruments, templates, and fixtures. Among other duties, you will repair equipment and submit maintenance requests as needed, verbalizing program errors. The person in this position will communicate with students about procedures and the necessary exchange of information for lab usage and coordinate with faculty on coursework and lab scheduling. They will also ensure the safe operation of all lab equipment in compliance with SCAD and OSHA safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a detail-oriented work ethic and thorough knowledge of wood, wood processes, and woodworking machinery. The candidate should be able to multitask effectively and should excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Minimum qualifications:      

  • Proficient in 3D modeling and industry best practices
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, as needed
  • Experience with CNC facilities, Rhinoceros 3D, SolidWorks (or similar software), and Mastercam
  • Familiarity with the SCAD School of Design studio equipment, techniques, and safety procedures

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:  

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Acceptance as a SCAD-authorized driver

Travel required:  

  • 10–20%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
