As the safety officer, you will patrol designated areas to ensure the safety of people, buildings, and equipment, whether on foot or in a vehicle. You will inspect the security of doors, windows, and gates; use keys to access and secure buildings; and monitor these areas for unauthorized individuals and suspicious activity. Additionally, you will assist the public with lockouts, jump-starts, and information sharing. You must also stay alert for security breaches, safety hazards, and emergencies, and report them immediately to the appropriate personnel and first responders. 

In this role, you will look out for unauthorized individuals and security code violations, approaching suspicious persons to confront or detain them until the police arrive. You will inspect emergency call boxes and streetlights to ensure they work, provide safe transportation for university employees and visitors, and monitor designated parking areas to maintain security. Additionally, you will prepare standardized reports and routine paperwork, control access to buildings and events, and act as the Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. You will also conduct security patrols without direct supervision.

The ideal candidate can communicate effectively, operate a motor vehicle safely, and stay calm during emergencies. The candidate understands and can follow specific instructions or procedures and has knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations. They are flexible, customer-service oriented, and skilled in providing protection services to individuals. Additionally, the candidate can carry out building security and lock procedures.

The candidate maintains a level of physical fitness that enables them to stand or walk indoors or outdoors during a shift, respond quickly to service calls, and climb or descend multiple flights of stairs.

Minimum Qualifications:       

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Knowledge of public security codes, policies, regulations, and Clery Act requirements
  • Ability to assist with lifting or carrying individuals
  • Ability to move items weighing up to 50 lbs. 

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:   

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record
  • CPR certified   

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
