The director of visitor and museum operations will provide stellar customer service thereby enhancing the image of the museum. In this role you are partially responsible for overseeing administrative functions of the museum such as the hiring and supervision of staff, including the student docents, museum coordinator, and security officers; this includes planning and executing trainings. The director will assist in the opening and closing of the museum, keeping spaces presentable, maintaining organized reports, and overseeing or performing daily sales activities. Another aspect of this job involves assisting with providing support to faculty and staff when using museum spaces.


Regarding exhibitions, the manager will work with the curators and exhibition staff to ensure docent success and to facilitate related programs. It is vital to coordinate with the deputy director for exhibitions to map out installation/deinstallation plans to maintain museum integrity with visitors.


The director of visitor and museum operations will act as a liaison between the museum and other departments to ensure clear communication and that procedures are being followed. A vital responsibility includes developing an emergency-preparedness plan.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Minimum of four years in operations role
  • Minimum of four years of management experience
  • Previous museum- or exhibition-related experience
  • Previous event management experience

Travel required: >10%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In order to accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
