As part of the SCAD University Recreation team, you’ll help students build a strong support system and encourage them to explore a wide range of resources and events that strengthen their social, physical, and emotional wellbeing. Students can try their hand at a colorful array of intramural sports — such as basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, and badminton — and step into nature with invigorating excursions, including hiking, biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more. You’ll also encourage students to push their physical limits through engaging fitness classes at SCADfit and ClubSCAD.

To support University Recreation, you will:
• Develop and implement programs that promote physical fitness, wellness, inclusion, and community among students, faculty, and staff
• Supervise an assistant director of fitness and wellness, an assistant director of fitness and buildings, and an assistant director of competitive sports
• Support administrative needs for all intramural, extramural, and club sport programs; • order and maintain equipment at ClubSCAD and SCADfit
• Oversee all outdoor recreation programs; lead assigned staff; implement and evaluate programs
• Develop partnerships and regular collaborations with internal departments via fitness and wellness outreach programs; oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of all student employees

As a director, you will:
• Monitor yearly budgets for all programs and work with assistant directors to ensure fiscal responsibility and resource management
• Serve as the primary point of contact for all building security and safety issues; inspect and monitor all buildings to enforce policies and procedures; implement the emergency action plan for weather, structural, and medical emergencies
• Communicate regularly with professional staff and program participants
• Represent the department with the office for student success and the greater university community
• Contribute to key university and student affairs committees and other functions

Strong candidates can:
• Maintain an active professional membership in university recreation programs
• Serve on various committees in national university recreation organizations such as NIRSA

Candidates should ideally demonstrate:
• Strong leadership skills
• A high level of expertise in group fitness and personal training

Minimum qualifications:
• At least five years of experience in university recreation
• Background in exercise science and healthy living
• Experience managing multiple professional staff members
• Experience directing at least one program (e.g., fitness, intramurals, club sports, or outdoor recreation)
• Proficient in one or both programs (i.e., outdoor and indoor recreation) or willingness to gain additional experience

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
• One or more personal training certification through a highly recognized professional organization (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, and NASM
• CPR certification

Travel required:  
• Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
