As an executive director of interior design, you will oversee the conceptualization, development, and execution of interior design, architecture, and construction projects. You will integrate new, creative design thinking into projects and initiatives and prepare design concepts, plans, and presentations for executive administration approval. Among other duties, you will provide leadership and direction to the SCAD design group interior design and architecture teams; supervise, mentor, and motivate team members to ensure high performance; and collaborate with other departments to achieve overall project goals. Additionally, you will stay informed of industry trends, new materials, and innovative design practices while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

In this role, you will present design proposals and concepts to stakeholders and university leaders. You will then address and implement their feedback. Responsibilities include the development and management of project timelines, budgets, and resources and collaboration with architects, engineers, and other professionals to ensure a cohesive design approach. You will ensure that designs align with SCAD requirements and budget constraints and coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and consultants to meet project timelines. Similarly, you will build and maintain strong colleague, client, and vendor relationships. Acting as a key point of contact for clients, understanding their needs and preferences is crucial to this position.

In this position, you will lead quality control efforts within the design group to ensure all locations represent the highest visual standards of SCAD. You will place an emphasis on highlighting SCAD artists and ensuring that the visual appearance of SCAD is breathtaking and remarkable throughout each SCAD building, event, exhibition, retail outlet, photo shoot, and initiative worldwide. Among other duties, you will implement and maintain quality standards for design deliverables, conduct regular reviews of design work to ensure university standards are met, and provide constructive feedback to enhance design quality.

The ideal candidate is a self-directed individual with excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills. They are adept at communicating concepts through visual presentation and can handle multiple, multicomponent projects and deadlines at once. The candidate is experienced with team project management in fast-paced, high-energy environment.

Minimum qualifications:      

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in interior design, architecture, construction management, or a related field
  • At least 10 years of luxury residential and commercial interior design experience
  • At least five years of senior leadership experience and/or training or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Revit, or similar design applications
  • Acceptance as a SCAD-authorized driver

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:  

  • Valid driver’s license

Travel required:  

  • 10–20%   

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
