As a University Safety officer, you will work in various locations across SCAD Atlanta as a patrol officer or a fixed-post officer. Both roles require deterring undesirable behaviors, writing and inputting reports, conducting visual inspections of facilities, directing traffic, responding to radio calls as needed, calling in safety concerns, and inspecting areas being patrolled. You will patrol assigned areas on foot, in an assigned motor vehicle, or in another specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.

In this role, you will watch for and report irregularities (i.e., security breaches, facility and safety hazards, emergency situations), contacting the necessary emergency responders as required. As you examine assigned areas to ensure security, you will remain alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators. Should a violation occur, you will approach suspicious persons, notify police as appropriate, and confront and/or detain violators, as required, until police arrive.

Additional responsibilities of the University Safety officer include providing escort services as necessary, as well as other public assistance (i.e., lockout services, jump-starts, routine information). You will use university keys to open and close buildings, perform periodic checks of emergency call boxes and/or streetlights to ensure proper functioning, and control access to facilities and events. The University Safety officer will serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.

The successful candidate can conduct security patrols without direct supervision, communicate effectively, complete routine paperwork, safely operate a motor vehicle, and follow specific instructions and procedures. The candidate has strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service abilities, including the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. The candidate must be able to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures; detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel; and provide protection services to individuals in SCAD Atlanta.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Skill in performing building security and lock procedures
  • Knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations
  • Knowledge of Clery Act requirements
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness that allows for running in response to calls for service, climbing or descending multiple flights of stairs, performing CPR, and assisting with the lifting or carrying of persons

Preferred qualifications:

  • One to two years of experience in a public safety or military command or dispatch center
