The carpenter/painter position supports the cutting-edge programming in the School of Entertainment Arts. With collaborations throughout SCAD, this position will work on building industry standard sets for television, live performance, themed entertainment, and interactive experiences. This position assists in supervising 200+ production design and performing arts carpentry and painting practicum students each quarter in the scenic shop at Crites Hall and performance venues such as Hamilton Hall studios A, B, and C, Savannah Film Studios, Lucas Theater, Trustees Theatre, Mondanaro Theater, Arnold Hall, non-traditional interactive projects that are site specific, multiple on-location film sets and SCAD’s first attraction/VR ride. This position also is responsible for the implementation of advanced carpentry and painting projects as assigned by the production technical director.

 SCAD Savannah seeks an experienced carpenter and painter to support the cutting-edge programs of SCAD School of Entertainment Arts, including building industry standard sets for television, live performance, themed entertainment, and interactive services.

In this full-time position, you will assist with the supervision of 200+ production design and performance arts carpentry and painting practicum students each quarter in the scenic shop at Crites Hall, in performance venues (e.g., Hamilton Hall studios, Savannah Film Studio, SCAD theaters, etc.), in non-traditional interactive projects that are site-specific, and for on-location film sets and SCAD’s first attraction/VR ride. You will supervise students on the latest technical applications in set design and construction, 3D printing, laser and CNC cutting, and CAD drafting software; assist the production technical director and assistant technical director with scheduling and supervising of student staff; and maintain the wood and paint inventory. Among other duties, you will also interpret construction drawings and paint elevations for entertainment arts construction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in production design or related discipline
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-level carpentry and painting for film, television, themed entertainment, or live theater
  • Experience in CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting, and driving a 16-foot or 24-foot box truck
  • Experience with entertainment arts rigging and CAD drafting preferred (e.g., AutoCAD, VRay, Rhino, Key Shot)

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. In order to accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other work days and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
