As the shop manager, you will coordinate shop hours of operation and staff schedules with the academic calendar, managing multiple shifts for shop technicians. In this position you will review shop usage statistics to ensure efficient use of personnel and space, organize and assign daily work tasks to staff, help with challenging projects, and develop/enforce shop policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responsibilities include communicating procedure changes, conducting staff meetings to review policies and identify areas of concern, consulting on all SCAD special projects and external requests for shop usage, and handling all overviews/tours of the shop. You will also evaluate the space to adjust changes.

In the role of shop manager, you will maintain shop equipment, provide routine maintenance, and report major repairs that are needed. You will be expected to ensure a clean, safe, functional shop; submit work orders and coordinate with Physical Resource technicians on repairs and shop maintenance requests; and work with the supervisor on the shop budget. Responsibilities of the manager include fostering relationships with vendors, researching new materials and equipment to support academic needs, and coordinating the delivery and processing of the materials. Additionally, you will work with faculty to prepare sufficient inventory and resources, ensure the sales terminal is accurately updated, and maintain the shop’s inventory.

The ideal candidate must be detail oriented and highly observant. They should be capable of coordinating with an environmental health and safety officer to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and, with the SCAD EHS, train staff on first-aid procedures and action protocols for emergencies. Additionally, they should be able to ensure first-aid stations are stocked and administer basic first aid.

Minimum Qualifications:      
• Advanced knowledge of the safe and efficient running of wood, metal, and plastic shop tools, equipment, techniques, and building processes
• Ability to lead a professional shop environment that upholds industry protocols and safety standards
• Proficient organization, problem-solving, time management, leadership, and prioritization skills
• Strong work ethic and high standards in quality of work
• Experience in managing multiple shifts (seven days and nights/week) of staff

Preferred Qualifications:      

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least three years’ experience in related field
  • Experience in an academic environment
  • Proficient computer skills and usage of Adobe and Microsoft software and 3D modeling/graphics programs

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:  

  • Valid driver’s license

Travel Required:  

  • Less than 10%   

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
