As a shop technician, you will ensure the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the shop equipment and facilities. You will provide excellent customer service to SCAD students from all academic departments to help them achieve their goals by safely using shop resources. Responsibilities include the enforcement of shop policies, procedures, and safety measures; basic fabrication and correction assistance; and inventory maintenance via WebCheckout. Among other duties, you will assist with demonstrations and equipment setup, train and onboard new staff, and handle loading, unloading, and processing delivered materials and equipment. You will also complete daily tasks diligently, such as cleaning, cutting stock materials, working on shop projects, conducting machine maintenance, and more.

In this role, you will proactively identify and address potential safety concerns, ensure strict adherence to shop policies, and report daily to the shop manager regarding safety or equipment issues. You will provide essential data, develop solutions to improve shop operations, and participate in all shop monitor meetings. Among other duties, you will administer minor first aid, demonstrate the safe and correct use of equipment, and participate in special projects or events as needed. You will be available to support the team during high-demand periods, including evenings and weekends. You will also conduct routine maintenance, thoroughly clean shop equipment and spaces, and ensure the POS terminal is up to date, with billing completed accurately and promptly.

The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. They are meticulous, detail-oriented, and highly observant, with strong critical thinking, time management, and prioritization abilities. They also show a strong work ethic by troubleshooting technical issues, offering guidance on tool use and techniques, and quickly adapting to changing needs. The candidate is knowledgeable about safety protocols and committed to maintaining a safe environment for both students and staff.

Minimum qualifications:      

  • High school diploma
  • Working knowledge of woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud software
  • Proficiency operating and maintaining industrial woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques
  • Available to work nights and weekends as needed

Preferred qualifications:      

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in a woodshop, fabrication, or academic environment
  • Knowledge in metal and plastic fabrication and equipment
  • Knowledge of furniture making, model making techniques, materials, and equipment safety protocols
  • Basic machine maintenance and mechanical knowledge

Travel required:  

  •  Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
