As a temporary sewing specialist, you will provide expert support to students in fabric preparation, pattern layout and marking, and garment assembly and pressing. You will demonstrate industrial and hand sewing techniques, as well as fine finishing, while maintaining a professional environment in specialized fashion studio areas. Among other duties, you will ensure consistency in fit and aesthetic based on each fashion student’s design intent, measure samples, and inspect the overall construction of student garments. Responsibilities also involve clear communication with students regarding fit corrections and technical information; the establishment of professional working relationships with fashion students, professors, and the department chair; and assistance with live-model fittings. Additionally, you will collaborate with fashion students to verify garment specifications and make necessary adjustments.

In this role, you will help fashion students implement design revisions and develop contingency plans. You will regularly operate industrial sewing machines, specialty equipment, and fabric manipulation techniques. Among other duties, you will ensure all projects meet high quality standards and align with SCAD's values, evaluate sample prototypes, inspect finished products for defects, and establish quality control standards for the technical team and office procedures. Overall, you will assist students in completing garments, from initial sketches to final products.

The ideal candidate has a professional interest in the clothing industry and is committed to a strong work ethic and high-performance standards. They demonstrate excellent communication and sewing skills with keen attention to detail. The candidate can identify apparel flaws quickly and effectively to adjust designs on the spot. They are also comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while pursuing continual development and growth opportunities.

Minimum qualifications:  

  • At least two years of sewing experience
  • Experience in operating industrial sewing machines, industrial sergers, and specialty sewing machines

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate degree in fashion design or a related program
  • At least five years of technical design and apparel manufacturing industry experience
  • Experienced in leading live fittings and evaluating overall fit
  • Ability to make fit and pattern corrections to achieve the desired fit
  • Knowledge in commercial fit and pattern standards, corrections, grading, and construction methods

Travel required:

  • Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
